The scene builder

Build interactive visualizations without writing code: composed scenes from shapes and sliders, or programmable scenes from blocks.

The scene builder lets you make a visualization visually, without writing frontmatter by hand. It lives at /keystatic/scene-builder and is open to editors only. Choose an Engine at the top.

Composed scenes

A composed scene is assembled from a library of reusable elements:

ElementWhat it draws
Circle, rectangleFilled shapes.
Line, arrowA line between two points, optionally with an arrowhead.
Text labelPlain display text.
CurvesLinear, quadratic and sine curves, or a polyline through 2 to 4 points.
Slider markerA marker meant to be moved by a slider.
Array with pointersA small array with named pointers and a highlighted cell.

You can add up to 12 elements, bind sliders or toggles to an element's parameter, and add up to 20 steps. Each step has an optional note (Markdown and math are supported) and lists only the parameters that change.

Programmable scenes

A programmable scene is a small program built from blocks. It can use variables, comparisons, conditionals and bounded loops, read the elapsed time or a slider's value, and emit the same elements a composed scene uses.

The program runs in a sandbox. It cannot run arbitrary code, loops are capped, and each frame has a fixed work budget. If a program goes over the budget, the last finished frame stays on screen with a notice.

Starting a new visualization

Use the "+ New visualization" button on any Keystatic screen. It asks for a subject, slug, title and engine, creates a clearly marked draft editorial, and opens the builder on it. The draft needs finishing before it is published.

Saving

"Save to editorial" rewrites only the editorial's visualization setting and leaves its text and other fields alone. In GitHub mode it commits to a new branch and does not open a pull request for you. The first save in GitHub mode needs a one-off GitHub authorization. If you see "GitHub authorization required", follow the steps in docs/scene-builder-github-auth.md in the repository.
